We are one lucky surviving tangent of the evolutionary whirlwind.
We generally have this hubris when it comes to our origin, existence and future on this speck of dust we call Earth – a sense that we are special and that we have an inherent purpose as an entity.
Yes, ‘special’ we are! Because evidently we seem to be the only species able to articulate its consciousness – communicate to each other our ‘awareness that we are aware’ – and organize ourselves as such. This existence brings our solipsistic existence in competition and at a cost to all other entities we have deemed to be sub-standard. We fail to realize that this ‘specialness’ is arrived at via our ever-increasing information processing powers rather than something we can lay claim to extraordinarily or something handed down to us supernaturally.
As for the ‘purpose’ of our existence, we are indeed free to choose our purpose but it is entirely localized to the time-space coordinates we happen to occupy and nothing again that is universal, singular and permanent.
So, one purpose, local and personal, I have assigned to myself is this journey toward increasing knowledge by asking all sorts of questions, exploring all sorts of answers via first-hand personal experience and also second-third-fourth hand shared knowledge trickling over to me (as Isaac Newton wrote to Robert Hooke, “If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants!”) as our species traverses this geographical and time spaces. This epistemological purpose is the only true one for us and makes us happy and free. Any purposed imposed upon us via mandate or legacy is irrational, ill-formed and illogical; stealing our happiness and our freedom.
It is precisely the process of shedding layers upon layers of myopic constructs that I will be able to make this journey towards a happy, free world I dream of.
