The United States is voting today – November 3, 2020! It’s hard-earned reputation as a leader and upholder of democratic values is in a state of erosion because of a singular narcissist enabled by a whole bunch of ‘party’ line-toers who don’t want to shake the boat. Republicans and their propaganda machines jump at opportunities to call Democrats words like ‘socialists’ and ‘communists’ to drum up support of their viewership. Hopefully, Republicans this time can see through the smoke-&-mirrors to see how ridiculously dictatorial and fascist their own party and its leadership is turning out to be.
I’m sure there were a lot of people in the 1940s who were thinking if only they had seen through the rhetoric of Hitler and stopped his rise and sway, the world could have avoided the untold misery that was World War II. This is it, folks! We are in that golden position to avoid a lot of worldwide misery and stop the rise and sway of another deranged dictator. Helped by propaganda genius Goebbels, Hitler portrayed himself as someone who could ‘Make Germany Great Again!’ He got the religious establishment to back him. He placed key figures in positions of control. He collaborated with other dictators.
I hope the US recognizes George Santayana’s warning: “When experience is not retained… infancy is perpetual. Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”
Strangely, the good thing – and a hope – is that in his megalomaniacal solipsism Trump doesn’t even pretend to care! His every action, tweet, scowl, insult depicts a deranged, psychopathic man-child and hopefully Republicans can see this and course correct their ballots as they cast them. Imagine the harm if Trump had – through devious baby-kissing, false-flag terrorism or heroism, and pretend empathy – put up a show of ‘leadership’ while continuing to hollow out the country and lowering the bar of human life the world over… your jobs as voters would have been way tougher! But now you know…. so use your chance and use it wisely!
I’m writing this the eve of the elections. Hopefully (doubtful though… with all the rhetoric about fraud and cheating that the president and his cronies are claiming), in less than 24 hours we will have a clearer picture of what will happen as the votes are being cast. Never have I been so invested in an election where I feel that the the shape of the free world is at stake! The absolute horror of a human being that took office in 2016 has reduced the US to this – that crasser voices have been given a platform and a megaphone to shout and lord over the chorus of kinder ones. I am not even certain that the plague of autocratic, heartless, selfish administration will be kicked out as it ought to be.
I can of course feel the pain that people who think like me, but don’t have the luxury of not being a US citizen, must have been feeling since November 2016. They have had to endure the head-hanging shame and misery of having their country led and represented by a imbecile at best and a malignant dictator at worst!
I know the shelf-life of this write up is very small. But I had to put it here more as a Canadian catharsis as my neighbors to the south decide whether or not to give this gigantic asshole the boot!
